Nova Scotia Liverpool Restaurant Review

I was recently invited to review Nova Scotia on the Liverpool Waterfront and I was delighted to accept. Nova Scotia is an independent bar & eatery that serves breakfasts, small plates, lunches, main meals and desserts. Dishes include burgers, Dockside hotdogs, full English breakfasts, sandwiches, salads and traditional UK meals like Scouse and fish and chips. For drinks, Nova Scotia offers Signature Serves including Sea Brow Iced Tea, Jamaica Street, NS Old Fashioned and French Martini cocktails. They do serve mocktails too, which was very pleasing as I don't really drink alcohol. There is a selection of beers and wines too, so there is something for everyone. The menu includes veggie and vegan options, as well as clearly indicating allergens including eggs, dairy, gluten, mustard, nuts, fish, soya and more. This is great as it makes it nice and easy to see what is suitable. They are open 9am to 9pm 7 days a week so they should be open at a time suitable for everyone.

I knew I wanted a mocktail as soon as I was told they could make one and it had raspberry purée, lemon and pineapple in it, topped with a strawberry and a piece of orange. Andy chose an ice-cold San Miguel which was lovely to have on a warm but rainy summer's day. He said it was a nice refreshing beer to accompany the meal. There is a good selection of drinks at the bar so there should be one for everyone.

To start, we had the Halloumi Popcorn (£7, Vegetarian), which were beer battered halloumi nuggets which came with a roasted red pepper mayo. There was a fair amount of these given they were only a small plate item and were so light and delicious. The batter was crispy and the halloumi was soft and cooked perfectly, with the mayo pairing well to give a nice additional flavour. We also had the Salt N Pepper Fries (£5, Vegan) which was a plate full of homemade fries with salt n pepper seasoning, fried onions and red peppers throughout and topped with red chillies and salad onions. I was so impressed with these fries, so much so I would say they are one of the best we've ever had. If they ever got in a plant-based 'chicken' burger they would be so perfect together. Salt and pepper seasoning is most definitely one of my favourite flavours and these fries are perfect.

For our main meals, they asked if we would like them brought over not long after we had started our small plates, which we said yes to which was kind of them. I had the Mauretania (£12, Vegan if you choose the plant-based hotdog), which had salt n pepper seasoning, onions and peppers. I'm not normally one to choose hot dogs, but the salt n pepper flavour swayed me and I really enjoyed it. Andy had the Marco Polo (£14, Vegetarian), which is a Moving Mountains burger topped with cheese, house burger sauce and beer battered onion rings. This was a really tasty burger, and the onion rings worked well and gave a little added crunch and flavour. Both meals came with a generous portion of the Nova Scotia seasoned fries which were homemade skin-on fries and were the right mixture of crispy and soft.

Nova Scotia is located in the Mann Island building, right next to the World Museum and the Three Graces right on the waterfront. At the end of the 19th Century, the Mann Island area was actually a shanty-town called Nova Scotia and the dock served Canada and the lumber trade. It twinned with Nova Scotia in Canada, and there is also a Liverpool in Canada along with a Mersey River and a Mann Island over there too. Check out the video at the bottom of the post that showcases the creation of a composite 19th Century map of Liverpool’s waterfront and city centre, focused on the Nova Scotia dockland area.

The restaurant had a great atmosphere, with lots of plants and beautiful green and white tiles. It has a nice casual feel but in the best way possible. It's perfect to have a catch-up with friends and family, or a few drinks outside when it's sunny. It was open and airy and had a good view out to the Liverpool Museum and docks area. They have a selection of seating, including raised stools, booths and standard chairs. There is a small curb outside of the restaurant but after this, the restaurant is step-free (apart from a couple of small steps to the regular toilets) although there is an accessible disabled toilet down a small ramp as well. There is space within the restaurant to use a wheelchair where you could wheel up to a table.

The only criticism I have for the menu, is that it would be great if Nova Scotia could add the option to upgrade your Seasoned Fries to Salt N Pepper Fries with your meal, potentially for an extra few pounds. If an upgrade to the fries was available, I highly recommend getting the Salt N Pepper Fries with a main, but if you really want to try them you could get a few small plates to share as the Salt N Pepper Fries easily serves two people. The staff were really friendly and helpful and contributed to a really enjoyable and relaxing visit. I'm definitely going to be returning at some point soon and would recommend making a visit if you enjoy great food and drinks.

2020 Is Approaching Us, So What Have I Achieved In The Last Decade?

At the beginning of 2010 I was 16 and about to finish the last 6 months of GCSE exams. I'd already moved to my Dad's house, had my appendix out, started a relationship with a boy I liked and mourned several people from my family in just a few close years. When I opened my exam results I was nervous, but I achieved a double A* in ICT, A's in Science, Religious Studies and Child Development, B's in English Literature, English Language and History, and C's is Spanish and Maths. At this point, I'd already decided that for my A-Levels I would choose History, Sociology and Psychology with an AS Level in English Literature. Throughout the next two years of studying those topics my baby sister Sofia was born and she is honestly the light of my life, my little best mate and she is a joy to be around. She's just turned 8 and it just shows how fast the years have gone by. I started going out drinking and had an amazing time with friends. I applied to study Law at Northumbria University and was accepted when I achieved an A in Sociology, a B in History and Psychology and a C in General Studies in my A-Levels.

I moved up to Newcastle and still managed to communicate with my little sister despite being 3 hours away from her. I met my flatmates and for the next year, they were all great friends. The closest person I became friends with was Andy, and we used to sit and watch TV together every time we couldn't be bothered to go on a night out. By two months in I knew he was someone I highly valued and was an all-round lovely person. Not long after the next semester started I ended things with boyfriend and a few months later ended up dating Andy. In our third year of uni, we got our own flat together and it tested our relationship, especially while both doing dissertations and end of year exams but it showed our strengths far more than weaknesses. We both graduated in July of 2015 and moved to my Dad's the next month.

During my uni experience, I began to develop pains in my body and couldn't decide whether it was in muscles or bones. I don't know why it had to be just one of the two but it turned out it was both plus nerve pain. After a lot of pushing to see a rheumatologist I finally was able to go and a doctor said I had Benign Joint Hypermobility Syndrome. This was an out of date term for Joint Hypermobility Syndrome but regardless I wasn't listened to properly and ended up back in the same hospital for another opinion eight months later. This doctor formally diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia and only verbally diagnosed me with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. I only found out it wasn't on my medical notes when I had a letter through the post that didn't mention it at all which only enraged me. It took until April 2018 for me to have it confirmed by a doctor and added to my medical notes. It took 4 years, which isn't even 'that' long in regards to being diagnosed with this condition. All in all, I've now been experiencing pain (I did have pain with EDS before but it was nowhere near as extreme) for over 6 years now.

An achievement that really should be highlighted is starting this blog. It began in February 2014 so we're coming up to the 6 year anniversary in a few months. I've worked with many amazing brands and PRs and although sometimes it's hard to keep up when you're in pain, I'm so thankful I can post when I can and some brands are understanding of this. I've managed to review hotels and restaurants, share my experiences of living in Liverpool and Newcastle, share holidays with people and review a lot of makeup and skincare. I'm really grateful for the opportunities I get.

Since graduating, we went to Los Angeles together as I won a competition to go which gave us a range of emotions and experiences and we'd definitely go back again. We saved up for years and finally last year we were able to buy our first home. Aside from leaving the kitchen cupboards in their place and painting them, we fitted new worktops, tiled the walls, plumbed in a new sink, changed the flooring and the result went from a dark scratched up kitchen to a bright white and grey one. We also fitted laminate flooring in four rooms of the house, dug up a fair bit of the garden, daringly painted our living room navy blue and so much more. That was a whirlwind of four months of renovation and it was so worth it. We made the decision to not have a TV in our bedroom too, to allow us to have a better nights sleep and that was another great decision for us both. Instead of having a dining room we have a creative space and beauty area room that stopped us cluttering up other rooms. Our house is our safe space and right now I don't even want to think about moving at some point.

I suppose the last big achievement for me was deciding to get married. In December 2017 Andy popped the question on a trip to Newcastle to visit for the first time since leaving. It was absolutely freezing! A year later we booked our wedding in, so in the first half of 2020, we will be getting married. Obviously, we have had to split the money between the house and the wedding, with the house being a priority, but 2020 felt about the right time for us. Not everything is sorted yet but we are most of the way there and glad we've made the majority of the decisions by ourselves. I will share a lot of the process and things like the invitation and the dress post-wedding and I'm looking forward to that too.

For things I'd like to achieve in the next decade, there's only a few things I'm certain will happen. The first will be to get our own dog. Our family dog Charlie lives with my Dad and has just turned 12 but I do miss having a dog in the house. I do think we will eventually move house in the next decade, partially for another project to work on as we love renovating, but also for a bit more space. I have my fingers crossed that I'll continue to work from home on blog things and move properly into freelance work too. We are hoping to have our honeymoon in Disneyworld in Florida but it really depends on money. We are thinking about having a 'minimoon' not long after the wedding so that if we don't get to have our dream honeymoon then at least we can have a little holiday to have a break. Aside from that, I'm not really sure what will happen.

Unboxing Liverpool

Watchshop challenged me to unbox my city to showcase some of the best spots and one's that you might not have heard about so I've included some photos and video of the day's activities. Apart from moving away to uni for a few years, I've always lived in Liverpool and it's been the place that I call home. Locals love showing off what their city has to offer and I'm no exception to that, and what better way to give you a taste of Liverpool than through photos and video. If you were thinking about coming to visit you won't be disappointed, with a snapshot of what to see and do in this post.
One of the things I enjoyed doing was to head over to The Wheel of Liverpool on the Albert Dock to get some of the best views across the city. It's a cheap way to get a look across the skyline with the docks area looking impressive from above. There is plenty to see from the wheel, especially when it's a clear day with some great photo opportunities while you slowly rotate around. Just across from the wheel there is a great place to eat called 'What's Cooking' that ended up being our pit stop for lunch. They have a range of options at a reasonable price with views out into the Albert Dock, so be sure to grab a window seat. You can check out our food in the vlog below.
If museums are more you thing, we have a good selection to choose from that should keep you nice and busy. The one you can see in the photo above is The Museum of Liverpool which has a range of exhibitions which you could spend quite a while in if you wanted to go around them all. It is quite a good option for a rainy day. There's even a whole section about the history of The Beatles and if that's not enough then we have The Beatles Story which is the largest permanent exhibition about the lives of the band.

After a long day wandering around the city your attention will probably start to turn to food. Liverpool has plenty of restaurants on offer, with a number situated on top of Liverpool ONE and some down in the main shopping streets. There are also a growing number of local restaurants starting to pop up, one of which we ventured to for the well earned last stop of the day. Yard & Coop is a new restaurant that opened up a few months ago and is all about chicken. If you like buttermilk chicken then it's definitely worth checking out as a change to one of the chain restaurants. You can check out some footage of what it's like including the food we got in the vlog below.

Liverpool's 'Proper Chicken' Restaurant | Yard & Coop

I've always said that Liverpool has been missing one thing, and that's been a chicken restaurant. A proper chicken restaurant. Last weekend I was invited to Yard & Coop  to try out their buttermilk chicken. Their menu is simple upon first inspection, with plenty of ways to customise your meal to get exactly what you're looking for. All of their chicken is "24-hour brined and buttermilked" to make it succulent, then crumbed in their secret herbs and spices recipe. It's also British Farm Assured Red Tractor too. Along with the chicken-based meals, there are a range of vegetarian options available too that looked delicious.
The decor is exactly what I expected; laid back, comfortable but chic. The lounge area close to the more gives off a huge 'Friends' vibe which I adored. We went at a really quiet time but it worked in our favour as we had no issue taking photos. Rest assured, I have seen photos of the place looking absolutely packed but again it worked better for us to go at a quiet time to get the photos we needed. From the first photo you can see how there are some chicken coops which really adds to the design. We spoke to the manager who told us that the design was totally different to the Manchester restaurant but I love how homely it feels, with the Smeg fridge by the bar to the unique cushions dotted around.

We had a look over the menu to see what options we had and pondered over the multitude of chicken options over a drink. I was going to try a shake, but I noticed there was the option to have Cherryade and the inner child in me said yes. It looked so much more appetising than when I had it as a child, but it was just as tasty. My boyfriend Andy opted for a pale ale which you can read more about in his review. If I were to visit during the evening I'd try out one of their many cocktail options, but since I was here for the chicken I stuck to something non-alcoholic.

Once we ordered, our lovely server Amy asked if we would like any side orders so we took her recommendation and tried the Mac N Cheese Balls too. They were crumb coated balls of macaroni and cheese, fried. We tried a few out when we were in Los Angeles last year and have been craving them ever since. They were a great side order and I think those and the Not Chicken Nuggets (crumb-coated halloumi balls) would be perfect as a side or along with chips for a main.

For my main meal I opted for the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Breast with chips, and for the sauce on the side I opted for the Bourbon BBQ which is described as a 'sweet and spicy BBQ with bourbon whiskey. I'm very particular when it comes to BBQ sauce but this was exactly what I was looking for. You can actually choose from a selection of 7 different sauces and since it comes on the side, you can dip your chips in or cover your chicken in it. If you're looking to try a few sauces, each pot of extra sauce is only 50p which is great. The chicken was honestly the best fried chicken I've ever tasted and I knew once I had my first bite that I would be coming back. I was a bit in over my head since it was the first time I visited, so next time I'll probably order my chips with the Coop Chicken Gravy for the ultimate chicken meal.

I was so full after my main even though I left about half of my chips, probably because I was focused on enjoying my meal instead of cramming everything inside. Amy came to ask if we would like any shakes or brownies to finish off. I was tempted to leave it after the main but the sound of the Cookie Dough Brownie sounded too yummy to resist. I asked to see a menu in case they had more brownies but Amy assured us that since the brownies are made fresh that day, they only make a few different types to keep them all fresh. It was cookie dough vs salted caramel but I knew that Andy prefers cookie dough so we went for that option. It was self-saucing which was beautiful, and Amy had asked if we wanted it hot with ice cream and my eyes lit up. It's the little things that can really make or break a meal, and hot brownies definitely finished the meal off with a bang.

You could tell that Yard & Coop really paid attention to detail, looking at the decor, the menu options and the food itself. The food came quickly with stunning presentation so I knew that we were being looked after. Having fresh food made everything taste so much nicer, and with £5 lunch deals during weekdays, we've already booked a day off work to come back. I'm always 100% honest when it comes to reviews and I couldn't fault this place at all. I've been to plenty of restaurants with a huge lack of chicken options which I relayed back to the manager (who was a lovely chap), and this is the solution. If you're in Liverpool, you need to check out Yard & Coop for yourself.

Evening Meal Deal at Jamie's Italian

Last week, myself and Andy were invited down to Jamie's Italian, Liverpool, to review their new Evening Meal Deal. You may not know, but we have been going to various Jamie's Italian restaurants over the past three years a hell of a lot. It's our go to place to go, for birthdays, celebrations or a light lunch. We both have the loyalty card called the Gold Card and we know that every time we go it will be completely worth the money. We've been to the Liverpool, York and Newcastle branches and all have exceptional service and beautifully seasoned food, so when we were asked to come to review we headed straight to the website to look up what the menu had to offer.

Our host that seated us ensured we had a comfortable booth to sit in and was absolutely lovely. Our waitress then came over and explained everything in detail making sure we were looked after and it started the evening off on such a good note. I started with the Passionfruit Royale which was just as I imagined; fruity, easy to drink and topped with Jamie's Prosecco. It was that good that I had another straight after I'd finished it. Andy went for the Moretti beer that he has every time that he comes whilst we looked over the Evening Menu. It's available from 6pm Monday-Thursday and is £18.95 for three courses which in my opinion is a steal.

As we had a Gold Card, every month you get a free taster and this month's was the Italian Nachos which is fried ravioli filled with mozzarella, ricotta and bello lodi served with a spicy tomato sauce. We get this as a full starter every single time we visit as it's extraordinary. We usually split this with the Polenta Chips too as they're like comfort food to me.

For the starter Andy ordered the Cured Meat Plank which was a selection of meats including fennel salami, pistachio mortadella, prosciutto & schiacciata piccante with mini buffalo mozzarella, pecorino and chilli jam and a selection of olives and pickles. For the portion size I'd say this was fairly large for a starter so to be included in the Evening Meal Deal was pleasing.  I went for the Tomato and Ricotta Bruschetta which consisted of slow-roasted cherry tomatoes, whipped buffalo ricotta with basil and extra virgin olive oil. It tasted almost like a really healthy pizza which I'd be keen to try out at home too. I have one of Jamie's recipe books already and this starter has encouraged me to try more of his recipes out. It was clear that fresh ingredients were made and that's what made it really special.

Andy noticed that the steak was on the meal deal, which is £15.95 normally so if you chose this you're definitely getting your money's worth. He's had the steak before and really enjoyed so was happy to try it again. It's flash-grilled prime beef steak with a herby heirloom tomato salsa, rocket, aged parmesan and spiced fries. They recommended it served pink so this is what he went for, not that I can really put an opinion forward as I don't eat steak. I went for the Spicy Sausage Casarece Pasta which was a free-range pork and fennel sausage ragu with British Cobble Lane 'nduja served with breadcrumbs and shaved parmesan to your taste. It was an incredibly generous portion and whilst I ate what I could, I only managed about half. I wouldn't say it was particularly spicy for my standards but I enjoy spicy food so for someone not used to it, it might bring a little kick.

For dessert we opted to order two and split them as we normally both get the Chocolate Brownie from the usual menu. First we tried the Baked White Chocolate Cheesecake which was the tastiest cheesecake I've ever tried aside from those in The Cheesecake Factory in America. The ratio of biscuit to filling was perfect and the coulis that it was paired with was impeccable. The second dessert we tried was the Molten Chocolate Praline Pudding which was a warm chocolate lava cake filled with a praline centre served with vanilla ice cream and crushed praline on top. Again this was a course that tasted like it was made fresh and the praline centre was something else. It was intense and rich and I don't think I could have eaten a full one even if I tried.

Jamie's Italian never let me down and in this case they exceeded my expectations. The Evening Meal Deal is amazing value for money with decent portion sizes and packed full of flavour.

Dinner at Crust Liverpool

Both myself and Andy were invited down to Crust Liverpool on Bold Street to pop down for a meal and as soon as we accepted we began to look at the menu on their website. Upon first impressions we were ready to delve into the pizzas so we booked in for 6pm on a Thursday night. Once we arrived we were promptly seated and handed menus to have a look at including their drinks menu that had more than plenty to offer. Looking at our surroundings it was clear that attention to detail was important at Crust, with the rustic vibe in the brickwork and the bright yellow feature colour to match their logo.

After looking at the drinks menu for quite a while as I couldn't decide what to have, I opted for the Blackberry Lemonade which consisted of fresh lemon juice, sugar juice, blackberries, basil, soda and ice. It was true to word and was most definitely refreshing. Next time I visit I think I'll opt for a sweeter option as I have a huge sweet tooth and it was more on the tart side than sweet. Andy opted for the Penny Lane Pale as he was intrigued to taste the local craft ales available. You can click here for his review that goes more in depth to how the ales tasted, as a 'the more sugar, the better' type of person I'm not one to drink beer etc.

For starters we decided to split a Focaccia with garlic and cheese and it was the size of a small/medium pizza, leaving us relieved it wasn't any bigger or we wouldn't have had rooms for mains let alone a pudding. This is certainly the best starter I've ever tasted; the mozzarella was beautiful to pull apart and the garlic wasn't overpowering, finished with a thin base. I'm left with no doubt in my mind that I will return purely just for the focaccia, and that's a huge compliment from a foodie.

For our main course we decided to split both dishes as we were both torn. I chose the Sausage Burger which included homemade sausages, sweet potato mash, fries and salad, topped with an Organic bun. Crust offers tour types of pizza bases and I was impressed to see this also relayed onto the buns for their burgers. The organic dough is their premium dough made from imported flour from Italy. Aside from not expecting to have a choice in this, which gains extra brownie points, it was a nice surprise to not have a standard burger bun. The chips it came with were seasoned to perfection and I could have eaten another portion. Andy chose the Pollo pizza on a Five Grain base that is a blend of flax, wheat germ, oat, spelt and rice flour to 'nourish from within'. The toppings were fior di latte mozzarella, chicken breast, grated potato, parmesan and rosemary and it was lovely but I felt it could have used something colourful to add to the presentation of the dish.

Before dessert Andy decided to try another ale out so chose the Toxteth IPA. I should have tried a cocktail out on retrospect but as I'm not a big drinker I kept sipping my lemonade. We decided to share a dessert and opted for the Ravioli Chocolate which was handcrafted sweet ravioli filled with a chocolate sauce, dusted with icing sugar and cocoa powder. It was unusual but delicious and finished off the night beautifully. In total it came to just under £40 which is outstanding for the amount of food and drinks you receive and is definitely one for students to take advantage of. I've promised myself I'll come back in the summer to try out their cocktails and Nutella pizza too.
